In the Autoblog Garage: 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP

There’s a Looney Tunes cartoon where Bugs Bunny is in charge of Yosemite Sam’s inheritance, and every time Yosemite Sam loses his temper at something Bugs has done, the rabbit subtracts money. By the time Yosemite gets his act together… he’s out of money. Substitute GM for Yosemite Sam and the buying public for Bugs Bunny, throw in a little credit crisis, and all we can say is that it would be a shame if the Pontiac G8 GXP fell victim to this scenario: GM running out of money just when it gets its act together. Because we’re here to tell you – and you can quote us on this – the Pontiac G8 GXP is @#$%&*! Awesome.

Five reasons to watch Smallville this season

Smallville's Clark Kent, Tom Welling“Not watching Smallville this season? I hear you.

Michael Rosenbaum’s Lex Luthor is history, the great John Glover is no longer chewing the scenery, and the last few seasons seemed to stretch the “Young Man of Steel” concept about as far as it could go. If you’re like me, you stopped DVR-ing Smallville even before last season’s dismal Kryptonite gum episode, “Hero,” which brought the show’s penchant for product placement to an all time low. But, for me, Smallville has always been like a Quarter Pounder value meal from McDonalds — cheesy, full of fat and empty calories, but wholly familiar and comforting. That’s probably why I tuned in to watch this season’s opener back in September, and I’m glad I did.”

Avatar fashion selection to double in a few months

Hopefully I’ll be able to get a pink speedsuit …

We just came across an Avatar ad on the New Xbox Experience’s Spotlight section (viewable above) that informs us that every two weeks new Avatar clothing will be available, which will double the current fashion selection over the next few months. And to keep everyone informed on the new goods, all new apparel will be marked with a yellow star when it’s released. We should also mention that we are not sure if the the upcoming fashion choices will be free or paid content (please be free) as we’ve heard Microsoft express their willingness to monetize Avatars in the future. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Sony blocks entire Netflix movie library from streaming to the Xbox 360

In an attempt to foil Microsoft’s plans of a flawless NXE Netflix launch, Columbia Pictures (a studio that’s owned by Sony) has made sure that its entire Netflix movie catalog is blocked from streaming to the Xbox 360. How rude!

The supercomputers behind World of Warcraft

“While I was at BlizzCon, I met someone who worked at Blizzard in their IT department, and the stories he told me (all off the record, unfortunately) about how gigantic and powerful their systems are were just mindboggling. I had to ask if he knew of anyone or any other industry shooting information around at the scale that Blizzard does, and with the one possible exception of Google (who also run digital information around at a staggering rate), we couldn’t think of anyone doing things at this scale. Not even financial networks and health care information (things, you’d think, that would be much more important than your level 73 Hunter and his gear) have these kinds of systems running.”
